This is a good resource and it is laid out well. If you need to begin with the basics I suggest starting with the top link to the Smithsonian soil exhibit and then going into the soil facts category.

This might be one of the most valuable resources on the internet for study of soils. The site has links to everything about soil, from helpful facts and definitions, to activities, lesson plans, songs and games. There is also a section for visitors to find the soil in their home state. It fits the Minnesota science standards for grades 2 and 5 on soil education. This site is one of the most comprehensive sites I have seen for a specific subject area.
