Radiation budget and how it affects daily temperature changes is a fundamental topic in an introductory meteorology class. However, it is difficult for some students to understand the effect that incoming vs outgoing radiation has on temperature. Usually one uses analogies (e.g., bank account) to explain this in class but only a few students can grasp the concept. Using a water bucket as illustrated in BudgetSim is an excellent way to address this topic. Some students still struggle with the question 'when does the level of water reach its maximum' even after the simulation but knowing this, I make sure to address it again in class.
