Natural Selection: The Pheasant Case
This lesson has students develop a Darwinian explanation for the sexual dimorphism seen in coloration between the male and female ring-necked pheasant. Students will work in groups to develop their explanation and craft a research proposal to bolster some part of their explanation. Students will participate in a simulated grant funding competition in which they will present their explanations and proposals to their peers who will serve as the funding committee. By the end of the lesson, students will have written a Darwinian explanation for the pheasant scenario and a research proposal. They will also have completed critiques of their classmates' proposals. The site also includes instructional notes for the teacher and the required student handouts.
