The goal of this NASA Earth Science Enterprise-funded project is to increase the use of satellite data in high school and college science classrooms by developing classroom materials linked to guided inquiry computer exercises. Studying the Earth's Environment from Space (SEES) consists of four modules on the following topics: 1) Stratospheric Ozone, 2) Global Land Vegetation, 3) Oceanography, and 4) Polar Sea Ice Processes. This record encompasses the Oceanography module. The module has three parts, classroom resources, computer lab resources, and a glossary and acronym list. The classroom resources are presented as electronic lectures viewable by a Web browser. Each section can stand alone (you don't have to use the lecture materials to complete the computer lab activities, and the classroom resource materials don't require that you complete the computer lab activities). The computer lab materials contain public domain software for data display and analysis, tutorials, satellite data, and computer exercises for students and an instructors guide. The software is a version of NIH-Image for the Macintosh that was modified by NASA Goddard Space Flight Center especially for SEES. It will also work on Windows machines with a Mac emulator. Image2000, a cross-platform Java version of the software, is expected to be available by the end of year 2000. After a student has learned about the scientific topic, satellites, data, and how to analyze the data, the student may continue on their own scientific discovery by accessing archived and current data from various NASA Earth Science data centers.</langstring>

<langstring>The "standards" characteristic are criteria that illustrate a level to which academic achievement is desired. The standards presented here include the National Science Education Standards and the National Geography Standards. The National Science Education Standards present a vision of a scientifically literate populace. They outline what students need to know, understand, and be able to do to be scientifically literate at different grad levels. The National Geography Standards provide guidelines on what students should know about geography.</langstring>
