The Case of the Missing Rumbleometer: A deep ocean mystery

The New Millennium Observatory (NeMO) is a seafloor observatory off the coast of Oregon, which studies the relationships between submarine volcanic events and the chemistry and distribution of hydrothermal vents and the biologic communities that depend on them. The research activities at NeMO provide an extraordinary educational opportunity, both from the daily reports from expeditions at sea and from creative learning materials based on NeMO results. This curriculum is based on real events and real data: the 1998 eruption at Axial Volcano and the rumbleometer instrument that was stuck in the new lava flow. The activities for the classroom are modeled on how scientists actually investigated this event. This curriculum is intended for middle and high school students in earth science and marine science classes and includes advice for presentation and additional background information that could be incorporated into the lessons. It is supported by the National Science Foundation, Oregon Sea Grant, and Oregon State University.

 <type>Teaching tip</type>

I used this resource as an enrichment for two of my gifted students when we were studying a unit on oceanography. It was well written and easy to follow. I assigned it to my students and they did the work independently in the library during my regular class period and did not seem to have any difficulty on the site. I hope to find more projects like this one on your site in the future. It was great!

Ocean World

The majority of Ocean World is devoted to a series of ten reference sections: coral reefs, currents, El Nino, Fisheries, Ice Ages, icebergs, JASON-1 (a satellite), the role of the ocean in weather, satellites and ocean exploration, and waves. Each section culminates with an interactive quiz, links to sources of related real-time data, and a list of additional related links. Also available is a set of supplementary services, including a glossary, a question and answer section called Ask Dr.Bob, an index page for all of the available real-time dataset sources, primer pages on the use of internet technology, and links to three distance learning courses in oceanography offered by Texas A&M university. An additional series of link lists are broken up into Four Star Sites, General Links, and (the site author's) Bookmarks. Finally, under a teacher's introductory section to the site, instructors can access a guide to using Ocean World in the classroom, find advice on teaching oceanography in general, locate technology lab stations, and follow links to additional teaching resources.

Ocean World

The Ocean World site has a wide variety of information regarding the ocean. Established by Texas A and M University's Jason Project, Ocean World provides a wealth of information on weather, forams, icebergs, fisheries, coral reefs, waves, El Nino, currents and more. The site contains information for both students and teachers. The teacher section of the site contains background information on all subjects, helpful hints for using the web in the classroom and classroom activities. Student users can access the latest news in oceanography and an abundance of oceanography topics information. There are also additional resources for both teachers or students including book lists, a glossary, a guide to four star sites and helpful links. This is a very useful site for any user looking for information about our oceans

Sustainable Seas Classroom Ideas

Multimedia approach promotes ocean exploration and conservation. Underwater expeditions to National Marine Sanctuaries provide case studies and data for lesson plans. Topics include: biological oceanography; ocean regions and habitats; physical ocean process; human links to and impacts on the ocean; applications of oceanography. Virtual expeditions link the classroom experience with the individual National Marine Sanctuaries, research methods and technology, and researchers' experiences. Free, on-line teacher workshops feature top ocean researchers and policy makers.

Sustainable Seas Classroom Ideas

Multimedia approach promotes ocean exploration and conservation. Underwater expeditions to National Marine Sanctuaries provide case studies and data for lesson plans. Topics include: biological oceanography; ocean regions and habitats; physical ocean process; human links to and impacts on the ocean; applications of oceanography. Virtual expeditions link the classroom experience with the individual National Marine Sanctuaries, research methods and technology, and researchers' experiences. Free, on-line teacher workshops feature top ocean researchers and policy makers.

SouthEast U.S. Atlantic Coastal Ocean Observing System (SEACOOS)

SEACOOS is a collaborative university partnership that collects, manages, and disseminates integrated regional ocean observations and information products for the coasts of North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida. The site offers a multitude of classroom activities, including Seamaven, an interactive introduction to ocean observing systems, and COOS 101, an ocean observing system primer. SEACOOS offers classroom resources, such as posters and brochures. The data is easily accessible and completely understandable.

National Marine Sanctuaries

Visitors to this resource will find information about U.S. marine sanctuaries - their history and current management, their scientific and educational programs, and their continuing efforts to conserve our nation's ocean and coastal treasures. A national calendar provides information on the many exciting events that take place in the sanctuaries throughout the year. Within the 13 sections of the site, users will discover a vast range of marine creatures, habitats, historical artifacts, and flourishing maritime cultures. These include the breeding and calving grounds of giant humpback whales around Hawaii, the remains of an 18th century shipwreck (the Monitor), and thriving coral reef colonies and kelp forests.

NOAA Ocean Explorations

Follow ocean explorations in near real-time, learn about ocean exploration technologies, observe remote marine flora and fauna in the multimedia gallery, review NOAA's 200-year history of ocean exploration, and discover additional NOAA resources in a virtual library. View current expeditions or take a look back at the archived ones. Most expeditions feature fact sheets, photographs, explorer logs, and ask an explorer.

COSEE-OS is a targeted pilot program with the long-term goal of helping the COSEE Network reach rural and inland audiences. COSEE-OS creates and evaluates a series of interconnected tools and techniques designed to broaden understanding of oceans in the context of the earth and solar systems. The foundation of the program is: educator-researcher team building, showcasing ocean systems, evaluation and identification of high-quality resources, and reaching rural and inland audiences.
