ADN framework

Framework purpose

The purpose of the ADN (ADEPT/DLESE/NASA) metadata framework is to describe resources typically used in learning environments (e.g. classroom activities, lesson plans, modules, visualizations, some datasets) for discovery by the Earth system education community.

Current version

Version 0.6.50 is the current version and is the version collection builders should use in order to contribute a news an opportunities collection to DLESE.

Milestones

  • June 2005 - native ADN cataloging for DLESE Community Collection (DCC) begins and native DLESE-IMS cataloging ends
  • January 2005 - version 0.7.00 alpha release for work on the Syracuse contract
  • (more detail of the transition from DLESE-IMS to ADN)
  • April 2003 - version 0.6.50 release
  • March 2003 - version 0.6.20 release - beta version of version 0.6.50
  • December 2002 - version 0.1.01 (alpha release)
  • July 2002 to December 2002 - development of the ADN item-level framework
  • June 2002 - DLESE-IMS is frozen
  • September 2001 - prototyping of the ADN framework commences. It is to be XML schema-based and use the idea of plug-n-play vocabularies. Until the new XML schema-based framework is deployed, the DLESE-IMS framework (supported by a DTD) remain in use.
  • June 2001 - DLESE, ADEPT Project (Alexandria Digital Earth Prototype) and NASA's Joined Digital Library (JDL) commit to creating a metadata framework all 3 organizations can use. This framework (called ADN) is a hybrid of the Dublin Core and IMS metadata frameworks that is suitable to the diverse audiences of DLESE, NASA and ADEPT.
  • October 2000 to June 2001 - DLESE adds several community fields to the metadata framework. Thus, the framework now only has a foundation in IMS and is call the DLESE-IMS metadata framework.
  • June 2000 to October 2000 - the DLESE metadata framework is based on IMS and uses a DTD
  • February 2000 - DLESE decides to use IMS metadata because it is XML-based and describes educational learning object.
