The Lewis and Clark Expedition was the first of many government surveys of natural resources in the American West, a task taken over in later years by the United States Geological Survey (USGS). The discussion includes the early surveys of the West (by King, Powell, Hayden, and Wheeler) and their relation to the USGS mission. There is also a page devoted to scientific discoveries made by Lewis and Clark such as the channeled scablands carved by the draining of Lake Missoula, and the volcanoes of the Cascades Range. Other materials include information on the USGS 125th anniversary, exhibits on the Lewis and Clark Expedition, map products devoted to the expedition, information on the role of Native Americans in the expedition, and a section of educational materials for educators and students.
