This map, produced by the United States Geological Survey, the Geological Survey of Canada and the Mexican Consejo Recursos de Minerales, combines geology and topography of the North American continent. The map, woven from a geologic map and a shaded relief image, reveals the geologic history of North America through the interrelation of rock type, topography and time to highlight regional surface processes as well as continent-scale tectonic events. The large map shows the varying age of bedrock underlying North America, while four smaller maps show the distribution of four principal types of rock: sedimentary, volcanic, plutonic and metamorphic. The map is available as an image file (jpeg), a downloadable, printable version (PDF), and as a hardcopy poster (must be purchased).
