This set of lessons for older students provides an introduction to the uses of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and spatial analysis in mapping, environmental issues, and coastal hazards. Students will learn how to use GIS for siting a fire tower or an internet cafe, perform a landfill and watershed analysis in Montana using hydrography and stream flow datasets, and examine hurricane hazards along the Texas Gulf coast using data from the Texas Natural Resources Information System (TNRIS). Links to maps, datasets, and imagery are provided. There is also a set of links to articles on the use of GIS in education, and to a poster about GIS.
