Estimation, Sampling, and Beyond DLESE Reviewed Collection
In this activity guide, students use various mathematical skills in the context of examining an ISS EarthKAM image (ISS 004.ESC1.03221557) of farmland in Texas and New Mexico. They randomly select a sample region of the image, count the number of fields in that region, and estimate how many fields are in the entire image. They check how reasonable their estimate is, compare estimates, discuss differences and repeat the process. They then consider the size of the farm fields. They estimate the average size of the fields using the dimensions of the image and their estimated number of fields in the image. They measure the field?s dimensions and use area formulas for rectangles and circles to calculate the size of some of the fields. They compare their results. Finally, they prepare a piece that visually and mathematically summarizes at least one aspect of what they have done. Students also develop fundamental skills in interpreting remotely sensed images. This activity guide includes teacher background materials, a recommended teaching procedure, and the ISS EarthKAM images used in the analysis.
