Coral Reefs In Hot Water
This activity explores the potential impact of climate variability and change on coral reefs. Designed to tap specific skills and knowledge through scientific inquiry, the activity more generally seeks to stimulate thought about the long-term impacts of a warmer planet. Through their participation in this activity, students will describe characteristics of coral and coral reef ecosystems; evaluate the importance of and threats to coral reefs; and describe the symbiotic nature of coral reef organisms. Students will then determine the impact of environmental change on coral reef partnerships; use Internet resources to examine data on the causes of coral bleaching events; and analyze the impact of humans and other environmental effects on coral reef ecosystems. The module is one of twelve of an overall series entitled The Potential Consequences of Climate Variability and Change that was developed to examine the potential impacts of climate variability and change.
