This product includes five classroom activities related to the discovery of water ice on Mars. In 2001, the Mars Odyssey spacecraft discovered significant amounts of water ice buried in the high latitude regions of Mars. This discovery, based upon data from the Mars Gamma Ray Spectrometer, helped motivate the development of the Mars Phoenix Lander mission, which arrived in the Martian arctic in 2008 ... This 5-minute animation portrays fluctuations in the cryosphere through observations collected from a variety of satellite-based sensors. The cryosphere consists of those parts of the Earth's surface where water is found in solid form, including areas of snow, sea ice, glaciers, permafrost, ice sheets, and icebergs. In these regions, surface temperatures remain below freezing for a portion of each ... Full description.
