Changes in the extent and stability of ice shelves in the Antarctic Peninsula prompted National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC) to begin a monitoring program using data from the their high resolution images, local area coverage and advanced very high resolution radiometer imagery. NSIDC regularly reviews images of those ice shelves considered susceptible to rapid change due to climatic warming. The ... Full description.

This site from SERC's Starting Point features Gallery Walk questions about glaciers. The questions examine glacial features, crops on outwash plains, the relationship between albedo and temperature, the relationship between worldwide glacier ice volume and sea level, and glacier mass balance. The questions are organized according to the cognitive level at which students are engaged, using Bloom's ... Full description.

This site from SERC's Starting Point presents sample Gallery Walk questions about the hydrosphere and cryosphere. Questions help students examine the effects of surface/subsurface hydrologic processes on the lithosphere, atmosphere, and biosphere, the use of climographs to construct water budget diagrams, and the manner in which the expansion and melting of Antarctic and Greenland ice sheets impact ... With this exercise, students use Excel to graph and analyze Vostok ice core data (160,000 years of Ice core data from Vostok Station). Data includes ice age, ice depth, carbon dioxide, methane, dust, and deuterium isotope relative abundance (dD). Students learn about ice cores and what they can tell us about past atmospheric conditions, learn about past atmospheric concentrations of CO2 and CH4 and ... Full description.
