News & Opportunity Community Collection (NOCC) Scope Statement

Collection scope

The purpose of the News & Opportunity Community Collection (NOCC) is to provide information and access to news, events, and opportunities of interest to the community. These resources include: awards, recognitions, and scholarships, calendars, calls for participation, grants and proposals, jobs, learning and research opportunities, news, and workshops.

These resources are defined as follows:

  • Award, recognition or scholarship - items in which money or honor (acknowledgement) is bestowed for work done or for pursing professional development or educational endeavors (includes honorarium and stipends)
  • Calendar - items that should appear on the DLESE web (html) calendar
  • Call for participation - items that include call for papers, call for input, testing, feedback, formative evaluations or collaborations
  • Conference - meetings of broad appeal that may include general audiences or specific Earth science communities and tend to be sponsored events
  • Grant or proposal - items in which funding is proposed, requested, called for or granted through a formal process in order to accomplish or establish a product, service or project
  • Job - any employment position for which participants receive remuneration (pay for work done but not a stipend or honorarium) including positions like postdocs, internships, fellowships, assistantships or research associates
  • Learning or research opportunity - opportunities in which individual learning or research is the primary focus such as field projects, courses, mentoring, tutoring, exchanges or college credit opportunities
  • News - general information or announcements that are of interest and which may not fit other categories
  • Workshop - short-term meetings or interactions that tend to have well-defined outcomes like training opportunities, professional development or skills development

The news, events, or opportunities usually cover a short period of time and have start/stop dates. The community may contribute to the collection.

Resource terms of use

Since news, event, and opportunity resources in the collection are not intended to be permanent resources, there are generally no terms of use.

Metadata terms of use

The metadata has a copyright of: Copyright 2000-2004 University Corporation for Atmospheric Research (UCAR). But the metadata may be used as long as it is consistent with DLESE Intellectual Property Policy, (http://www.dlese.org/documents/policy/DLESE_IP_approved.html). This allows for the redistribution of metadata records. Individual metadata records are available for harvest from DLESE.

Resource quality assurance

There are two quality assurance issues, resource quality and metadata quality. The resources made accessible via the collection vary in quality because the resources are chosen by the DLESE community. Chosen resources are of community interest and fall in the realm Earth system science and education.

Metadata quality assurance

In terms of metadata quality, metadata is reviewed by the quality assurance (QA) team at the DLESE Program Center (DPC). The QA team ensures resource meet the criteria to be part of DLESE, provide a spell check, ensure all metadata attributes are complete and applied correctly, assign metadata record identification numbers and do periodic link checking of URLs. The collection uses DLESE's current metadata format and provides all required metadata. The collection is directly searchable at: http://www.dlese.org/news_opportunities/news.jsp

If library users find errors or have suggestions for improvement for the collection, such changes will be considered and changes will be made as appropriate.

Persistence plan for the collection

The collection is expected to continue growing and to exist indefinitely as long as funding is reliable. Currently, funding is available through August 2007. If the funding situation changes dramatically enough to impact operations, the collection will cease to exist.
