Contribute a resource

The Digital Library for Earth System Education (DLESE) encourages library users, community members and resource developers to contribute to the library. This not only grows and strengthens the library, it encourages the reuse and sharing of materials. This document is a reference guide for how to contribute information about individual resources to DLESE. To contribute information about a collection of resources, please see contribute a collection.

The benefits of contributing resources include:

  • Exposure: DLESE marketing and outreach activities promote access to resources
  • Distribution: resources also are made available to the National Science Digital Library (NSDL) and other digital libraries
  • Discovery: search and browse mechanisms target resources to appropriate audiences
  • Reputation: resources can be peer reviewed to be part of the DLESE Reviewed Collection

How to contribute

1. Determine if the resource is within scope of the DLESE collection

Read the DLESE Collection Scope and Policy Statement to determine if the resource is within scope of the DLESE collection. If the resource is not within scope, re-evaluate whether DLESE is the correct library for the resource.

2. Determine the resource type and catalog the resource

DLESE accepts several different types of resources, listed in the table below. The right column indicates how to catalog each type of resource. All contributions are subject to the requirements in the Collections Accessioning and Deaccessioning Policy.

How to view resources in DLESE

Contributed resources are discoverable in the library after they have undergone complete cataloging and quality control. Such resources become part of the DLESE Community Collection (DCC) and may be found by searching in the DCC collection on the DLESE homepage.

Resources contributed via the Post an item tool are available in the News and Opportunities section of the library and are organized by the type of announcement, e.g. workshops, grants, news, etc.
