Annotation framework - all versions

Annotation defined

In the DLESE context, annotations are additional content or metadata that is appropriate to associate with a resource.

Content examples include

  • Graphical layers of weather fronts over weather satellite imagery
  • A diagram to visually depict how to set up lab equipment while the actual resource has a paragraph of text explaining how to do the setup

Metadata examples include:

  • Indicating state educational standards the resource addresses
  • Providing a review of how the resource works in the classroom

Framework purpose

In DLESE, the annotation metadata framework serves any of the following functions:

  1. Create a collection of:
    • Comments, educational standards, teaching tips or ideas for use
    • Reviews or contextual explanations
    • Additional information about resources (the information may or may not be directly in the resource)
    • Graphical layers over web-based resources
    • Annotations or other summary information
  2. Capture comments or feedback by library users when that information cannot be directly added to the metadata record of the resource
  3. Capture information that is not a metadata field in any DLESE metadata framework, e.g. state educational standards
  4. Be the gatekeeper to the DLESE Reviewed Collection (done under certain conditions)
  5. Connect an annotation or comment to a specific web page (URL) of a resource
  6. Provide an overall rating of a resource (only version 1.0.00 or later)
