URL or access information - the url to an online resource or access information to a physical object
Description - a narrative describing the content, purpose or goal of the resource
Subject - general topic areas that the resource is about or covers
Technical requirements - information related to platform requirements, browsers and plug-ins, etc.
Resource type - an indication to the type of educational resource, such as lab exercises and tutorials, etc.
Audience - grade range of the resource
Copyright - copyright statement and any other restricted usage or lack thereof about the cataloged resource
Cost - indication as to whether there is a cost associated with accessing or using the resource
Resource creator - contact information for the author or publisher of a resource
Resource cataloger - contact information for the cataloger of a resource
Required metadata: Collection builder provided
Language of the resource - the language of the resource
Language of the metadata - the language of the metadata or catalog record
Copyright of the metadata - an indication as to the ownership of the metadata
Terms of use - an indication as to how the metadata may be used
Metadata framework - the metadata scheme used to catalog the resource; there is a default value: ADN (ADEPT/DLESE/NASA Alexandria Digital Earth Prototype/Digital Library for Earth System Education/National Aeronautics and Space Administration)
Creation date - the creation date of the metadata record
Accession date - the accession date of the item in to the collection builder's collection
Catalog name and number - an identifying name like DLESE and an identification number for the metadata record like a library call number
Record status - indicates the status of the record within a collection, such as accessioned, working, deaccessioned etc.
Robust metadata
All other metadata not included as required metadata is considered optional/suggested/robust metadata. Some examples include:
Different vocabularies can be valid for the same field. Multiple vocabularies for the same field are allowed after rigorous review and registration.
The presence and some validity of required metadata can be immediately detected
Detailed geospatial geometries can be described
Contains educational fields (e.g. who uses the resource, who benefits from the resource, what is a possible teaching method and what is the instructional goal)
Places (San Diego, CA) and events (Hurricane Andrew) are separate entities available for searching
Time, other than AD, can be described (i.e. can say something like billions of years ago or 2500 BC
If an element is part of DLESE required metadata but does not have a controlled vocabulary, it must appear in a record.
If an element is part of DLESE required metadata and has a controlled vocabulary, it must appear in a record with at least the default value for the particular vocabulary.
If an element is not part of required metadata but has a controlled vocabulary, it should only appear in a record if the element has content and that content must be from the controlled vocabulary; a default choice is not allowed.
If an element is not part of required metadata and does not have a controlled vocabulary, it only appears in the record if the element has content.
